Even the most durable of vehicles needs a little TLC now and again. A car tune-up will help your vehicle to last longer, run smoother, and perform better.

Everyone’s heard of a “tune-up,” but only a few people know what it actually means. The truth is, a car tune-up is a kind of preventative maintenance that varies according to the car. It’s basically a comprehensive service that should be performed at least once a year to keep your car running at peak efficiency. Regular tune-ups are also a great way to prevent bigger repair jobs down the road.

What is involved in a car tune-up, and when do you need one?

Tune-ups differ according to the car being serviced: older cars have different maintenance needs than newer cars, V4 engines run differently from V8 engines, and so forth. That being said, here are some common tune-up tasks that we perform at R & R Auto Systems:

  • We’ll check the air filter and replace it as needed
  • We’ll inspect the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor
  • We’ll visually examine the vacuum hoses and air intake manifold for leaks and loose connections
  • We’ll look for wear and tear on engine belts, like the serpentine belt, the timing belt, the A/C compressor belt, etc.
  • We’ll check fluid levels, and refill or replace any fluid if necessary
  • We’ll test the air conditioning system for performance issues

Generally speaking, you should have a tune-up at least once a year. However, in some cases you may want to have it done more often. For example, if you have an older model vehicle then it may need more frequent maintenance than newer cars. Or if you live in a really hot climate (like Las Vegas) then you may need an A/C tune-up in the spring, before summer arrives.

We typically recommend a cooling system service every 50,000 miles, and a decarb service (for GDI engines) every 25,000 miles. Other services, like timing belt replacement, often depend on manufacturer instructions.
