A car that won’t go is bad. A car that won’t stop is worse.
This isn’t news, but a car’s braking system is really important. The last thing you need when you’re driving along at 60 mph is a brake failure — after all, that would put you and others in harm’s way.
Fortunately, modern brakes are designed to be tough and long-lasting. However, that doesn’t mean they will last forever. For safety reasons, you should have your brakes serviced now and again, and even replaced if necessary.
When do you need a brake service?
You may notice some warning signs that your brakes need servicing. Do you hear a high-pitched squealing sound, or a grinding noise when you press on your brakes? That may mean that your brake pads are wearing out. Do your brakes feel “squishy” when you step on the pedal? Not good: you may have air in the lines, or a failing caliper.
Of course, the best thing to do is to get your brakes serviced before one of these issues comes up. We generally recommend that you have your brakes checked every 20,000 miles. When we perform a comprehensive inspection of your brakes at R & R Auto Systems, we will:
- Check your calipers for leaks
- Examine your brake pads for wear and tear
- Inspect your rotors for cracks
- Look at your brake lines, flush them as needed, and replace your brake fluid
